Personal Care Attendant
Job Description

Title

Attendant Staff - Primary responsibility is to provide assistance to the tenant in all areas of daily living. This involves taking instruction from the tenant you are working with, and is, based upon each tenant's independent ability, and on guidelines provided by program and supervisory staff.


Accountability

Directly responsible to Attendant Staff Co-ordinator.


Responsibilities and Duties

  1. Provide assistance to physically disabled tenants in transferring, bathing, washing, dressing and grooming, as well as facilitate the use of special aids, and devices where appropriate for these functions.

  2. Provide assistance as required with respect to bowel and bladder routines, including: care of urinary appliances and other special equipment.

  3. Provide assistance in meal management including: meal preparation, placing food in/out of the oven, turning the stove on/off, cutting meat, serving meals, packaging and storing food, and feeding when necessary.

  4. Provide assistance as required in day-to-day housekeeping activities including; cleaning stove top, wiping counter-tops, sinks, bathroom fixtures and cleaning spills, and dishwashing.

  5. Provide assistance as required in day-to-day apartment management. This includes: laundry, making beds, changing bed linens, and taking out garbage.

  6. Provide assistance in ventilator care and suctioning as instructed by the tenant.

  7. Provide assistance with Passive Range of Motion Exercises to physically disabled tenants.

  8. Communicate any observed progress or difficulties tenants are experiencing in activities of daily living, or working with attendant staff to Supervisor and/or resource staff.

  9. Attendant staff are expected to participate in staff meetings and staff development programs.

  10. Provide assistance in other areas of independent living, such as: checking wheelchair batteries, getting things from storage cupboards, and other related tasks for which the tenant does not have the resources to manage independently.

  11. Encourage tenants participation in daily living tasks as appropriate.

  12. Perform other duties as required.


Qualifications

  1. The ability to accept responsibility, show good judgement and initiative, and work with a minimum of supervision.

  2. The ability to work closely with others in a courteous and thoughtful manner, and maintain good communication with tenants and other staff.

  3. The ability to maintain confidentiality, in respect to the privacy of disabled individuals worked with, is essential.
