Housing Registry
Wheelchair Accessible Housing Directory
In 1979 Ten Ten foresaw a need for and began to work towards formal development of what many people term a "Wheelchair Accessible Housing Registry". Ten Ten consulted with external agencies that were currently using Ten Ten's housing services to determine a suitable housing data resource. The undertaking was intended to have the capability to provide useable housing information to Manitobans that have a disability.
Through the Challenge 91 summer student program Ten Ten was able to pull together a computerized data base of information sources on apartment buildings and dwelling units that would be suitable for use by a wide range of persons who experience difficulty locating living environments suitable to their physical needs. This data base of information was mainly compiled from site survey data amassed through CMHC research, Ten Ten Sinclair on site survey recordings, early wheelchair access surveys done by the Canadian Paraplegic Association, information gleaned from Manitoba Housing and supplemental information from a variety of other sources.
To establish an ongoing working framework for this data and to extend the number and range of potentially suitable dwelling units available for consumer access the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation has played a major role. While the major focus of the data base is on housing for persons who have a physical disability, any data that was available for other disabilities has been recorded.
How the Database Works
From research Ten Ten will be using the British Columbia Model for delivery of housing service and resource requests. Basically it employs a "Clearinghouse" approach to bring the consumer and housing together. One individual assumes responsibility for coordinating all requests for accessible housing and referrals to potential landlords. This model offers the ability to register requests for, and match the needs of individuals with available housing. It also offers the landlords one familiar person to whom they can refer vacancies and expect referrals. Finally, through a centralized resource recording system it is possible to look to the future, to plan for and development new housing resources for persons with a disability.
Current Service Intent
- Wheelchair Modified Housing Registry
- Ten Ten will maintain an inventory of all units brought to our attention in Winnipeg and Manitoba which have been modified for wheelchair users, as well as a registry of persons requiring such accommodation. Depending on the nature of the request Ten Ten will either refer applicants to known housing sources or match applicants with currently available vacancies. Final tenant selection rests with the landlord.
Ten Ten may register Wheelchair Accessible single family homes if the demand continues. A few Real Estate Agents regularly post available properties to our attention.
- Housing Referral and Information
- Ten Ten maintains a listing of subsidized and affordable housing as well as accessible private market housing in the data base. These units may be suitable for both the younger and senior disabled populations. Most information is complete with contact names and addresses.
Ten Ten will maintain records of additional housing stock that may not be specifically designed for use by a person with a disability but, due to the versatility of the dwelling units can be suitable for some disabled consumers.
Explanations and interpretations of major government housing programs and services is available on request.
